Summary
How the prostate affects urination and what changes mean for your health.

Because the prostate surrounds the urethra, any change in its size or shape can affect how easily you urinate. This close relationship is why prostate problems often show up first as urinary symptoms.

Normal Urinary Flow

A healthy prostate allows urine to pass freely through the urethra. You should be able to start your stream without waiting, maintain a steady flow, and empty your bladder completely.

When Flow Changes

If the prostate grows inward, it can squeeze the urethra. This may cause a weak stream, difficulty starting, dribbling after finishing, or a feeling that your bladder is not fully empty. These signs are worth discussing with your doctor.
