Summary
From watchful waiting to surgery, a clear look at how BPH is treated.

Treatment for BPH ranges from observation to medication to surgery. The right choice depends on how much your symptoms bother you, your overall health, and the size of your prostate.

Watchful Waiting

If symptoms are mild, your doctor may simply monitor you over time. Many men never need active treatment.

Medications

Two main types of drugs are used. Alpha blockers relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck, improving flow quickly. Five alpha reductase inhibitors slowly shrink the prostate over several months. They are sometimes used together.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

When medication is not enough, options like Rezum, UroLift, or HoLEP can relieve obstruction with less downtime than traditional surgery.

Surgery

For large prostates or severe symptoms, a TURP or simple prostatectomy removes the obstructing tissue and provides lasting relief.
