Summary
The essentials of prostate cancer, from how it starts to how it is found.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. It develops in the prostate gland when cells begin to grow out of control. Many prostate cancers grow slowly and may never cause harm, while others are more aggressive and need prompt treatment.

How Common Is It

About one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. The risk rises with age, and most cases are found in men over 65. When caught early, the outlook is excellent, with a five year survival rate near 100 percent for localized disease.

How It Is Found

Screening usually begins with a PSA blood test and may be followed by a digital rectal exam. If results are concerning, a biopsy confirms whether cancer is present and how aggressive it appears.
