Summary
A plain language guide to the drugs used for BPH, cancer, and prostatitis.

Medications are often the first line of treatment for prostate conditions. Understanding how they work helps you have informed conversations with your doctor.

For BPH

Alpha blockers, such as tamsulosin, relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder, improving urine flow within days. Five alpha reductase inhibitors, like finasteride, gradually shrink the prostate over months. They are sometimes combined for better results.

For Prostate Cancer

Hormone therapy reduces testosterone, which fuels many prostate cancers. It may be used alone or with radiation. Newer drugs like abiraterone and enzalutamide are used for advanced cases.

For Prostatitis

Antibiotics treat bacterial prostatitis. For chronic pelvic pain, anti inflammatories, alpha blockers, or muscle relaxants may help.
